***** A brilliant & refreshing take on space opera.

Humorous. Extremely unique. I loved it.

Think merchant academy, set in deep space with something a bit off about it. It’s the way the characters inter-relate with Jake Stewart. He’s from a small out of the way space depot. Students are mostly from rich trading families compared with his lowly beginnings, where surviving is about prosperity not cooperation.

If you’ve read/listened to Moriarty’s other series: Decline of an Empire, you’ll love this too.

The Blurb

The Galactic Empire disappeared a lifetime ago. Jake Stewart doesn’t care, he needs to earn a living.

He fled his station in the outer Belt, enrolled in the merchant academy, and snagged a scholarship. The future looks bright. But a crooked boss, some paperwork shenanigans, and a freeloading best friend put him in a bind.

When he’s accused of a murder he didn’t commit he goes on the run from the Planetary Militia. There’s only his wits and a suspiciously helpful pretty girl between him and jail. Can he trust her to prove his innocence? Or does she have another agenda?

Tired of books where everything that moves gets shot? How about a book where people use their brains? If you like strategy over tactics, and thought before action. The Adventures of a Jump Space accountant series is for you.

Book Review Time

He turns bullying on its head.

Jake Stewart is a student who is great with numbers on a special scholarship at the Merchant’s Academy out in deep space. Many of his colleagues try to take advantage of his skill rather than learn the skills for themselves. Most of the students have ulterior motives and Jake finds that hard to navigate.

Twists and turns you don’t see coming.

The situation hots up as this becomes a whodunit. Jake is framed and has to solve the mystery to clear his name and do what he came for, get good grades at the academy.

The characterization can take a bit of getting used to at first. The characters are late teens and early twenties. The way they bounce dialogue off one another reflects that. Personally, I found it refreshing once I got into the characters.

Totally Bingeworthy.

Truly entertaining. I suggest trying this story and if you enjoy it, consider a bulk offer. I found this author’s stories through his Free Booksy and joined Andrew Moriarty’s mailing list. This is my favourite author newsletter. Highly recommended.

Audiobook Performance

<Audible  Kobo+>

The performance is 6 hours 58 minutes. William Turbett really knows how to deliver the origins of this found family as they grate against one another in this first book. A truly entertaining performance in this book and consistent across the whole series. Can’t wait for the audiobook of book eight. ***** Excellent characterization!
