It feels like at least a few years since I've read a sci-fi novel where the promise is 'inventor figures out a thing, consequences ensue,' even though traditionally, that 'is' sci-fi. This novella gives that premise a very modern, compelling twist, framing Athena's struggle to get her life together after the death of her husband and the derailment of her career against the larger crisis of oil industry and the climate crisis. I enjoyed the tensions that the story raises — the oil industry is villainous but the individuals within it have compelling reasons to fear and fight green energy transition. It's a very cool little book that you should be warned ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.
