Not all stories come with a prologue anymore. This one did. A starship’s hull breach in-progress as a promise of what’s to come. And it delivers, and delivers. The whole book is set over a short period of time. Don’t let the introduction to Priam Shaw fool you. His act of kindness quickly backfires on him. A target is now on the back of his head. Not wanting to involve his dad, added to the realness. So who’s after him? Corporations, the Government, the bankers. If they’re not with him, they’re probably against him. Who can he trust? Priam’s gut says, the survivor. Conspiracy, high speed space travel, tech toys, and heaps of secrets all waiting to be unravelled.
Priam Shaw dreams of escape; of adventure and excitement. And why wouldn’t he? He’s broke and stuck in a frozen wasteland, scraping by on odd jobs while the cold monotony of his life slowly seeps into his bones.
Overhead, Aeyt clings to life as her ship slowly dies, its long journey through the dark finally at an end. When she wakes, she will be a fugitive, a prisoner who dreams of freedom.
For Priam, Aeyt brings with her all the excitement and adventure he could ever want. But dreams can be tricky things, and he is about to discover why . . .
LANCET is about human experimentation and its coverup by state actors, the quest for self-discovery, empathy, revenge and personal autonomy.
He’s closest. Protocol takes over.
Priam’s a young disillusioned man on the planet Snow, which suffers extreme white out weather. He lives with his father and goes out to fix fence posts which are down due to a meteorite as the next massive storm cell is in-coming. Short of time from the outset, he’s finishing up when he witnesses the crash landing of a spaceship.
Think life’s not exciting? Be careful what you wish for.
Are there survivors? Priam investigates. Secures the ship so it doesn’t blow while he’s searching. His reading’s don’t look promising. He locates a faint life sign. Despite the storm, he’s no murderer and digs his way into a ship that’s undergone extreme rebuilding and finds a cryo-pod. One that is something new. Impossible. Yet here it is.
So weak, the odds are she won’t make it. Priam can only wrap her in his big coat. The chances of them getting back to his tonka machine, is beyond low. The temperature outside will burn exposed flesh. Somehow, she hangs on… Her healing capacity is off the radar as his transport chugs back to the settlement in the heavy snow. It’s late when they get back. His dad is out, giving Priam time to get some facts from her. Her name’s Aeyt; she’s hungry, and she’s got access to every system without a device. All she wants is to leave on the next transport and miraculously she’s arranged it in an instant.
If you think you know what will happen, you’re probably wrong!
Priam’s life has just hit the skids because investigators arrive by morning. He lies about there being a survivor. His ‘bend the rules’ attitude make him convincing. Soon she’ll be gone. But the crack corporate security team doesn’t give up. Priam’s glorious internal straight arrow continues to protect her existence until he makes a wrong move… and the corporates are on him. The rest, as they say is spoiler material.
What I loved most overall about Priam was the way he didn’t tackle every kick ass fight. He thought it through. He chose his battles according to his skills and knew when to let others fight the battle for him.
Don’t wait. Get Lancet today!
Descriptions are glorious and engaging from the start. Just enough creepy. Just enough gore. Tons of story, action, and analyzing. Characters are super interesting, especially the young hero. Looking for high octane — this is for you. Pacing is fast, damn fast but accessible because you feel the pressure.
If you haven’t read Lancet, you should! Montgomery’s work is a quality read. Unputdownable from the moment Priam finds the survivor. I truly look forward to more books. Congratulations Don! This was one heck of a debut novel.
